Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) is partnering with Carbon County Area Vocational Technical School (CCAVTS), Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI), Schuylkill Technology Centers (STC), and College Misericordia to develop an Information Technology 2+2+2 Educational Program. This program will allow for the seamless transition of students from the secondary level through the associate degree level to the baccalaureate degree level.  Temple University, East Stroudsburg University, and DeSales University has also expressed support for this program and has committed to reviewing the possibility of articulations with LCCC and its partners in information technology.

Information technology is the occupational area that will be the focus of the curriculum in this project.  The secondary, two-year postsecondary, and four-year postsecondary curricula are derived from a number of LCCC’s current Computer Specialist A.A.S. degree programs and its Computer Specialist — Information Systems Certificate.  This degree and certificate allows the student a number of career directions and the ability to pursue an education in the information technology field following completion of each level of education.  The community college, career and technical schools, and four-year colleges collaborate during the curriculum development process to ensure the transferability of credits through the “pipeline” up to the baccalaureate level, resulting in articulation agreements that will provide students with at least 15 credits of advanced standing at the next educational level without the need for testing.

In addition to earning 15 college credits that will transfer to the postsecondary level and receiving advanced standing at the next level through articulated courses, secondary students will have the opportunity to participate in LCCC’s Middle College program.  Students may enroll in college courses at the main campus or at one of LCCC’s sites in Carbon and Schuylkill counties and receive both high school and college credit.

Information Technology Summer Camp - for students entering the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades

Students will learn the importance of teamwork, communication, and critical thinking while having fun learning about computers. Students will learn various computer processes; databases, spreadsheets, word processing, graphics, and web design through interactive “hands-on” activities.  Information Technology is a multi‑faceted, highly marketable field, rich with employment opportunities.  In this unpredictable economic marketplace, it is never too early to carve out a future path.  This camp will give students a preliminary roadmap to travel into the future.

Pre-Engineering Summer Camp - for students entering the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades

Lehigh Carbon Community College is delighted to offer this fully funded camp experience that addresses the complex and timely question....What does an engineer do?  The exploration of various engineering disciplines is only the beginning of this hands‑on experience.  Engineering is a predominantly "problem‑solving" profession, students will be presented with various problems that they will learn to solve using the scientific method.  Well aware that this is a summer experience, our instructor is committed to providing a stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere that is a departure from the traditional classroom.

Environmental Summer Camp - for students entering the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades

Students will become familiar with environmental issues relating to the Nesquehoning Creek Watershed by collecting samples and analyzing data using standard analytical kits.  Working in teams students will compile data and overview various pollutants, their sources and potential health effects.  Field work and sampling for chemical/physical analysis is emphasized.  Students learn the requirements of planning, sampling, and data reporting.

Nanofabrication

As part of the Information Technology grant, students learned about careers in Nanotechnology.  In April of 2005, 15 students from STC and CCAVTS traveled to LCTI for a hands-on experience in nanotechnology.  Students, under the direction of LCTI instructor Mr. Ed Mulligan, learned the basics by fabrication a silicon wafer in LCTI’s cleanroom.
