Program Success

The cornerstone of the 2+2+2 Workforce Leadership Programs is a strong industry/education partnership.   The outgrowth of these 24 partnerships has been the recognition of national awards and funding that has been received by several of the projects.

  • Delaware County Community College (222WLG for AET) with industry partner  Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center, $4 million in 2004 for Applied Engineering Technology
  • Montgomery County Community College, (222WLG Biotechnology) is one of five national community college partners involved in a National Science Foundation $3 million award to develop biotechnology technicians.
  • East Stroudsburg University,  (222WLG Computer Security) Center for Research and Economic Development, (CFRED) assisted in the $15 million proposal and award as a partner in the 9-county Wall Street West Initiative to provide training and infrastructure for computer security and information technology.
  • Northampton Community College, (222WLG Biotechnology) has been awarded a Department of Labor grant for $713,000 in 2007 to train manufacturing and research technicians.
  • Harrisburg Area Community College (a 222WLG post-secondary partner in advanced manufacturing with the Lancaster Career Center) received a $2 million federal grant to provide advanced manufacturing training.
  • The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education received an $810,000 multi-year National Science Foundation award in 2006 to increase the supply of engineering and engineering technologists entering the community colleges.
  • The Technology Collaborative (222WLG for Robotics) partner, Carnegie Mellon University, received a $900,000 multi-year National Science Foundation award in June 2007 to increase the supply of agile robotics engineers for the defense department.

In addition, related to the 2+2+2 program, Pennsylvania can claim home to the only secondary institution in the country that has its own clean room facility (Lehigh Career & Technical Institute); the only university in the nation that offers both two- and four-year degrees in electro-optics (Indiana University of Pennsylvania); and the first university in the nation to offer a bachelor's degree program in computer security (East Stroudsburg University).
